Hi, how can we help you today?

Reskinning Assets

This guide walks you through using Scenario's AI tools to update colors and details on existing assets while maintaining their structure. Reskinning allows you to transform assets without starting from scratch, perfect for creating variations of characters or props for different themes or environments.

We'll explore two methods

  1. Manual sketching for precise control (via image-to-image)

  2. Style Reference for faster, automated transformations (but less control)

Why Reskin Assets?

Reskinning assets saves valuable production time by preserving the structural integrity of your designs while changing their visual presentation. This technique is especially useful for:

  • Creating seasonal or factional variants of game characters.

  • Developing themed variations of buildings or environments.

  • Producing multiple design options for clients or stakeholders.

  • Testing different color schemes and materials without rebuilding assets

Method 1: Reskinning via Manual Sketching

This method gives you direct control over specific changes and works effectively with both Flux and SDXL models.

Step 1: Load Your Asset as a Reference

Select the asset you want to reskin and click "Use As Reference" to open the generation interface.

Your image will be pre-loaded as a Reference Image. If the image was generated in Scenario, the original prompt will load automatically, streamlining your workflow.

Make sure you have the correct AI model selected. For maximum consistency, use the same model that was used to generate the original asset.

Step 2: Set Up “Dual Reference” Mode

Enable "Dual Reference Mode" by selecting "Image to Image + ControlNet" from the reference options.

Load the same image into both reference slots. This creates a setup where one reference controls color/style while the other maintains structure.

Set the ControlNet Mode to "Structure" to preserve the asset's form throughout the process.

Step 3: Sketch the Changes

Click the Edit (pen) icon on the top reference image to access the sketch interface.

Use the sketch tool to paint over the areas you want to modify. For example:

  • Add new colors to a character's armor or clothing

  • Change building materials from stone to wood

  • Add emblems or decorative elements

  • Modify terrain from grass to snow or desert

For an isometric building, you might recolor rooftops for a weathered look, or change wall textures completely.

Step 4: Adjust Influence & Generate

Set the influence of the top image (your sketch) to 20-25. This controls how much the AI follows your modifications while still blending naturally with the original.

Adjust the structure influence for the bottom image to 50-100, depending on how strictly you want to preserve the original form. Higher values maintain precise structure.

Click "Generate" to create your reskinned asset.

Even rough sketches can produce excellent results, as Scenario will analyze both the structure and your color indications to create a coherent transformation.

This method allows for targeted edits, making it ideal for precise changes to specific elements while keeping the rest of the asset intact.

Method 2: Reskinning with Style Reference

For comprehensive style transformations without manual sketching, Style Reference offers a powerful automated approach. This method works particularly well with SDXL models.

Step 1: Load Your Asset & Set “Dual Mode”

Select your asset and click "Use as Reference" to open the generation interface..

Enable Dual Mode by selecting "ControlNet + Style Reference" from the reference options.

Set ControlNet to Structure Mode and adjust the structure influence to 50-100 to lock in the asset's shape throughout the transformation.

Step 2: Add a Style Reference Image

Upload a Style Reference image that represents the new aesthetic you want to apply. This could be:

  • A different architectural style for buildings

  • A new material palette for environments

  • An alternative faction or theme

Adjust the Style Reference influence to around 25 to balance the new aesthetic with the original structure. This creates a harmonious blend while preserving the core design.

Step 3: Generate & Refine

Click "Generate" to create your reskinned asset. Scenario will blend the original structure with the new style, creating a cohesive variation.

This method is particularly effective for transforming entire sets of assets to maintain a consistent theme, such as converting medieval buildings to steampunk or changing a fantasy character to a sci-fi aesthetic.

Finalizing & Enhancing Your Assets

Once you've reskinned your assets:

  • Use Scenario Enhance to upscale the resolution and refine details for production-ready quality.

  • Experiment with different influence levels and style references to create a variety of results, building a library of themed variations.

For maximum consistency across multiple assets, save successful reskinning parameters and reference images for future use.

Final Notes

Reskinning assets in Scenario reduces the time needed to create variations while maintaining design integrity. Whether you need faction-specific character designs or season-themed environments, these techniques give you flexible options that balance efficiency with control.

For best results, maintain structural elements while allowing creative freedom in colors and decorative details. This approach ensures your reskinned assets remain functionally equivalent to the originals while offering fresh visual appeal. Dive into our Reskin Assets tutorial for a complete guide.
