Hunyuan 3D is Tencent's family of image and sketch to 3D generators on Scenario. The lineup now spans three generations plus two specialized tools: Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.1 is the current flagship for turning a photo, multiple angles, or a sketch into a textured mesh, Hunyuan Polygen 1.5 retopologizes an existing mesh into clean game-ready geometry, and Hunyuan 3D Part splits a mesh into separate components. The earlier 3.0 Pro and 2.1 generations remain available for pipelines already built around them.

Open-source baseline. Rapid prototyping, research, or a quick reference point, not production geometry.

Rule of thumb: start every new job on Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.1. Reach for Polygen 1.5 afterward if the mesh needs cleaner topology for animation or a real-time engine, and for Hunyuan 3D Part when you need to separate a mechanical object into pieces. Drop back to 3.0 Pro only if your workflow specifically needs its Optimized Mesh mode or explicit triangle/quad control, both absent from 3.1 today.


How to Use the Model

Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.1: Standard, MultiView, and Sketch

3.1 Pro builds on the 3.0 architecture with improved geometric precision, more accurate texture color reproduction, and faster inference, particularly on watertight meshes and complex joints. It keeps the same three input modes:

  • Standard: a single reference image.

  • MultiView: a required front image plus up to seven more optional angles (left, right, back, top, bottom, left-front 45°, right-front 45°), the widest angle coverage in the Hunyuan lineup on Scenario. More angles reduce guessed-at geometry on sides the front image cannot show.

  • Sketch: a line drawing plus a required text prompt describing style and material, since a sketch carries no color information.

The interface for all three follows the same layout shown below for the 3.0 generation: upload your image or images, set the face count, and generate. Prompts remain optional on Standard and MultiView, useful for steering the general aesthetic.


Hunyuan Polygen 1.5: cleaning up topology

Game assets need clean topology for rigging and efficient rendering. Polygen 1.5 uses an autoregressive mesh generation approach to convert dense, point-cloud-like meshes into structured, quad-dominant geometry end to end, using BPT (Blocked and Patchified Tokenization) to preserve detail while compressing the mesh. Feed it any GLB or OBJ, from Hunyuan or any other source, and it returns a retopologized, animation-ready version.

Hunyuan 3D Part: splitting a mesh into pieces

Hunyuan 3D Part analyzes an existing mesh and automatically identifies and separates distinct components, gears, connectors, housings, screws, shafts, outputting organized sub-meshes ready for editing or reuse. It is most effective on mechanical or hard-surface objects that need structural segmentation for kitbashing, physics simulation, or downstream DCC work.

Previous generation: Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.0

3.0 Pro shares the same Standard, MultiView, and Sketch modes as 3.1, uses a hierarchical 3D-DiT carving process, and supports up to 1.5 million polygons. Unlike 3.1, it exposes an explicit Optimized Mesh generation mode (Tencent's PolyGen retopology baked directly into generation) and a triangle-versus-quad polygon toggle, neither of which 3.1 currently offers. Keep using 3.0 if your pipeline depends on either.

Hunyuan 3D 2.1: open-source baseline

2.1 is a fully open-source model, released with complete training code and weights. It remains a reliable option for research, quick baselines, or static assets that will get a manual retopology pass afterward, but for production geometry, Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.1 is now the recommended standard.

128 to 5000 pixels per side, up to 8MB, jpg/png/jpeg/webp. Standard takes one image. MultiView requires frontImage and accepts up to seven more optional angles, more coverage reduces guessed-at geometry on the sides and back a single photo cannot show.

faceCount

On Hunyuan 3D Pro (3.1 and 3.0): 40,000 to 1,500,000 faces, default 500,000. Higher values add geometric detail and file size. On 3.0 Pro, this is ignored when Optimized Mesh generation is selected.

generateType

On 3.1 Pro: Normal (textured mesh, default) or Geometry (mesh only, no textures). On 3.0 Pro, a third option, LowPoly (Optimized Mesh), routes the output through Tencent's PolyGen retopology system for a cleaner, lower-poly, animation-ready mesh, a mode not present on 3.1 today. For a 3.1 output that needs the same retopology, run the result through Hunyuan Polygen 1.5 afterward.

polygonType

3.0 Pro only. triangle (default, real-time engines) or quadrilateral (sculpting and rigging). Not exposed on 3.1 Pro.

enablePbr

Default false. Turns on Physically Based Rendering materials for more realistic lighting response, at extra cost.

prompt

Required on Sketch (up to 1024 characters), since a line drawing carries no color or material information. Describe the subject and its material, for example "weathered bronze statue" or "cute plush toy, felt texture." Optional on Standard and MultiView, where it can steer the general aesthetic without replacing the reference image.

Step Count and Guidance Scale (Hunyuan 3D 2.1)

Step Count sets the number of denoising iterations, 30 to 50 improves texture detail at the cost of processing time, 30 is a reasonable starting point. Guidance Scale balances following the reference image against plausible 3D interpretation, 5.0 to 7.5 is typically the best compromise.

Supported export formats: GLB & OBJ

GLB: a single file embedding geometry and PBR textures, ideal for game engines, web viewers, and AR. OBJ: separates mesh from textures, better for manual UV or material work in Blender, Maya, or ZBrush. Hunyuan 3D Part additionally supports PLY.


Use Cases

  • Production hero assets: Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.1 Standard or MultiView for top-tier production assets where geometry accuracy and material color consistency matter most.

  • Concept-to-3D: 3.1 Sketch to turn a line drawing or rough concept sketch into a textured prototype without traditional modeling.

  • Game-ready cleanup: Polygen 1.5 to bring a dense mesh from any generator down to clean, quad-dominant, animation-ready topology.

  • Mechanical asset prep: Hunyuan 3D Part to separate a mechanical model into gears, connectors, and housings for kitbashing or physics setup.

  • Rapid prototyping: Hunyuan 3D 2.1 for quick, low-stakes baselines or research comparisons.

  • Legacy pipelines: Hunyuan 3D Pro 3.0 when a workflow already depends on its built-in Optimized Mesh or triangle/quad controls.


Tips for Better Results

  1. Start on 3.1 Pro for any new job. It is the current flagship: better geometry precision and color accuracy than 3.0, at the same input types.

  2. Feed MultiView every angle you have. 3.1's MultiView accepts up to eight angles including top, bottom, and both 45° fronts, the most complete coverage in the family; more angles measurably reduce guessed-at geometry.

  3. Use clear, well-lit references with the subject centered. Clean backgrounds and even lighting improve reconstruction on Standard and MultiView alike.

  4. Adjust face counts to the target platform. 40k to 50k for previews and mobile, 500k to 1.5M for hero or close-up renders.

  5. Reach for Polygen 1.5 instead of waiting on 3.0. If a 3.1 result needs retopologized, game-ready geometry, run it through Polygen 1.5 rather than switching the whole job back to the 3.0 generation.

  6. Use prompts for material, not geometry, on Sketch. Since the sketch carries no color, spend the prompt on describing the material and finish you want.

  7. Iterate on lower face counts first. Confirm the shape and proportions at a lower faceCount before committing to a 1M+ final pass.


Known Limitations

  • 3.1 Pro has no Optimized Mesh or polygon-type toggle. Those two 3.0-only controls are not yet exposed on 3.1. For built-in retopology, either stay on 3.0 Pro or run a 3.1 output through Hunyuan Polygen 1.5 afterward.

  • Sketch has no PBR-material nuance beyond the prompt. A line drawing carries no color, so material fidelity depends entirely on how well the prompt describes it.

  • Higher face counts increase file size and render cost. Budget faceCount to the target platform rather than defaulting to the maximum.

  • 2.1 is an open-source baseline, not a production model. Expect lower fidelity than any Pro generation; use it for prototyping and research, not final assets.
