FLUX Video Upscale: The Essentials

FLUX Video Upscale is a video-to-video super-resolution model on Scenario, powered by Black Forest Labs' FLUX.3. Feed it an existing clip and it regenerates the footage at a higher resolution rather than simply interpolating the pixels that are already there, sharpening detail that compression or a low-resolution source destroyed.

It supports output at 1080p, 2K, or 4K, with a single creativity dial that switches between staying faithful to the source and actively inventing new detail.


Precise or Creative: Which Mode Should I Use?

FLUX Video Upscale ships two philosophies behind one creativity parameter, not two separate models. Both take the same input and scale to the same resolutions; the difference is how far the model is licensed to depart from what was actually filmed or rendered.

Precise (creativity: 0)

Creative (creativity: 1, default)

Fidelity first: sharpens exactly what is there.

Detail-rich: reconstructs and invents texture the source never had.

Best for faces, products, brand marks, footage of real people.

Best for scenery, crowds, textures, and already-stylized or AI-generated footage.

Identity stays locked, even at 3x (see the astronaut and kitchen examples below).

Sharpest results on generated or animated content, but faces and products can drift.


How to Use the Model

Upload a source clip, pick a creativity mode, and set how far to scale it. The examples below come straight from this article's test batch on FLUX Video Upscale, source clip and settings included.

Precise Mode: Identity-Faithful Upscaling

Precise mode is the right call whenever a specific face, product, or brand detail has to survive the upscale unchanged. Source on the left, FLUX Video Upscale output on the right.

Creative Mode: Reconstructing Detail

Creative mode is the right call on stylized, animated, or already-synthetic footage, where inventing extra texture reads as enhancement instead of distortion.

Parameters

Four inputs control the whole model. There is no separate sharpen, grain, or frame-rate dial.

video

Required. The clip to upscale, up to 20 seconds and 50MB. Source aspect ratio carries straight through with no separate crop control: the portrait sources in the woman-at-laptop and young-man examples below stayed portrait at every factor, while the widescreen swordsman and tennis sources stayed widescreen.

prompt

Optional, up to 10,000 characters, and it only affects Creative mode. Several strong Creative results in this batch, including the swordsman dungeon, felt doctor, tennis serve, and rain-soaked arena examples, were generated with the prompt left blank, so treat it as an optional steer rather than a requirement. When you do write one, describe the detail to invent (fabric weave, individual hair strands, fine ground texture), the way the robotic-legs and woman-at-laptop examples below do, not the scene itself.

upscaleFactor

Range 1.5 to 3, default 2. Source aspect ratio is preserved, and cost follows the resulting long-edge tier (1080p, 2K, or 4K). In this batch, a 1280x720 source at 2x landed at 2560x1440 (the astronaut example above), while the same 1280x720 source at 3x reached a full 3840x2160, true 4K (the kitchen and swordsman examples above).

creativity

0 (Precise) or 1 (Creative), default 0. Precise stays faithful to the source and sharpens it; Creative restores and invents fine detail more aggressively. Compare the astronaut (Precise) against the swordsman (Creative) example above for the same 3x scale, applied with opposite philosophies.

Tips for Better Results

  1. Reach for Precise whenever a real face, a specific product, or a brand mark has to stay recognizable. The astronaut, kitchen, spacecraft, vehicle, and ocean-cliff examples above all held up clean in Precise mode, even at 3x.

  2. Reach for Creative on stylized, animated, or already-synthetic footage. The swordsman, felt doctor, and robotic-legs examples show added texture reading as enhancement rather than distortion.

  3. Push upscaleFactor to 3 once you are happy with the source. 1280x720 sources in this batch reliably landed at a clean 3840x2160, true 4K, at 3x.

  4. Plan the source orientation before upscaling, not after. There is no crop or reframe control; portrait sources stayed portrait and widescreen sources stayed widescreen at every factor tested.

  5. Leave prompt blank unless you need to steer specific detail. Several strong Creative results in this batch, including the swordsman and tennis examples, used no prompt at all.

  6. When you do write a prompt, describe the texture to invent, not the scene. The robotic-legs and woman-at-laptop prompts named specific surfaces and materials rather than re-describing the shot.

  7. Start from the least-compressed source available. Per Black Forest Labs' own guidance, the model repairs compression artifacts and soft detail, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured.


Known Limitations

  • 20-second, 50MB input cap. Longer or heavier source clips need to be trimmed or compressed before they reach this model.

  • Creative mode can drift on faces and product identity at high upscaleFactor. This is Black Forest Labs' own documented tradeoff; use Precise whenever a specific person, product, or logo must stay exact.

  • No separate sharpen, grain, or frame-rate dial. Unlike some other upscalers on Scenario, creativity and upscaleFactor are the only two levers exposed here.

  • Very large 4K outputs can be too big to preview inline in some tools. One clip in this batch's test run exceeded 100MB; the rain-soaked-arena example above is shown as a still frame with a link to the full clip on Scenario for that reason.
